Boudoir Art Photography
Boudoir (fr."lady's bedroom") is a word synonymous with Pin-up and Glamour in this particular genre of photography. Thus Boudoir Art Photography encompasses Pin-up and Glamour Photography. These terms are sometimes mistakenly attributed to the sexual act or pornography but this is far from the minds of the women who wish to have their images portrayed in Boudoir fashion and certainly not the intent of Boudoir Art. Undoubtedly, Boudoir Art indirectly strokes the fantasies of the male sex, but the goal of the glamour photographer is to help create the female clients' vision of attractiveness and beauty which seldom includes anything which is pornographic. As an art form for galleries or other commercial endeavors shot with paid models, the same principles apply.
Contrary to any pornographic images, Boudoir Art is more open to a wide range of women's ages and body styles due to the simple fact that it is different from pornography which must certainly be constrained to women of a specific age group.
The purpose of Boudoir Art is to portray the beauty of every subject. It seeks to capture the true beauty in an instant of perfect timing, revealing an image which cannot be viewed in the mirror by oneself. A Boudoir photographer must understand the methods of putting the subject at ease, orchestrating the dress and expression, manipulating the light, and capturing the perfect pose all in the instant the shutter operates for the most beautiful image that can be made of the subject.
As a woman is usually their own toughest critic, the photographer must do the positive thinking for the client. Although not every woman could be a Victoria's Secret model, you do not have to make them look like one. A good Boudoir Art Photographer must just be able to exceed the perception that the client has of herself when she looks in the mirror.
There are six unique styles in Boudoir Art which should be understood to enable the photographer to have a mind map which will help to find the most flattering image of the subject.
Classic Beauty. This is the elegant style of boudoir art which causes the reaction of, "Wow, how absolutely beautiful she is." Sexuality is only subtly implied, but the Classic Beauty image will be unmistakably feminine and elegant as well. These images range from head shots to full length, fully clothed to completely nude. The key factors are to pose and light the subject to accentuate the hourglass figure, the roundness of the breasts, and hide any unattractive attributes such as hips too wide or tummy too fat. A head and shoulder shot or head shot usually has the head tilted toward a high shoulder and emphasizes the eyes, lips, facial structure, and hair.
Fashion. The fashion style of Boudoir Art is what you see in advertisements for clothing, cosmetics, and jewelry. This style is popular because women are always looking at these types of advertisements and they would enjoy being portrayed as one of these beautiful models. As a glamour photographer, you will have women bringing magazine clippings as examples of what they would like you to create for them. Fashion styles are usually fully clothed using high key lighting and plain backgrounds with minimal props.
Artistic. Imagine "abstract" to describe this style of Boudoir Art Photography. It truly replicates gallery art as it is statue like, the style of famous portrait painters and graphic art designers. A key aspect of the artistic style is that the form, not the faces, are dominant. Rarely are the eyes the center of focus and usually the subject never makes eye contact with the camera.
Pin-up. This is the sexy and cute style of Boudoir Art. The pin-up image must tease and titillate the viewer with the subject's expression and body language making the image. The glamour photographer's technique will be to support and accentuate the usually fun, playful, and sexy message that pin-up should display. Take a look at the nose art used on the WWII bombers to get an idea, as this is where the style is derived. Since the body language is so important, the pin-up style is usually full length or 3/4 length shots.
Sensual. Probably the most common style categorized with Boudoir Art, the sensual style brings the thoughts to those "bedroom eyes." The image is one which overwhelms the senses with the vision of a desirable body, voluptuous and pleasurable. The subject is usually reclining with an expression of peace, pleasure, and dreamy longing and a veiled lustfulness - an implied blissful surrender. Eyes are usually closed or not looking at the camera but a look of carefree disconnectedness from the everyday world. The subject should be imagining a place she would love to be to create this valuable piece of Boudoir Art.
Provocative. This style of Boudoir Art is self expletive. The image will look assertive or playful, but they are virtually demanding attention. Subjects will always be making direct eye contact with the camera with obvious confidence with only a hint of a smile, if any at all. This style can be mixed with all of the other styles easily and captured in the same settings.
